Our Order of Worship
|
| After the call to worship the Minister leads in a prayer of invocation. |
| "The congregation being assembled, the minister, after a solemn calling on them to the worshipping of the great name of God, is to begin with prayer". (Westminister Directory of Public Worship) |
| Following the prayer of invocation the Minister then reads the Holy Scriptures. |
| "It is requisite that all the conanical books be read over in order, that the people may be better acquainted with the whole body of the scriptures; and ordinarily, where the reading in either Testament endeth on one Lord's day, it is to begin the next." (Westminister Directory of Public Worship) |
| Following the scripture reading we sing a psalm and then the Minister leads in prayer. |
| "After the reading of the word, (and singing a psalm,) the minister who is to preach, is to endeavor to get his own and his hearers hearts to be rightly affected with their sins ... and to call upon the Lord...." (Westminister Directory of Public Worship) |
| Then the Minister preaches the Word of God. |
| "Ordinarily, the subject of his sermon is to be some text of scripture, holding forth some principle or head of religion, or suitable to some special occasion emergent; or he may go on in some chapter, psalm, or book of holy scripture, as he shall see fit." (Westminister Directory of Public Worship) |
| Following the preaching and hearing of the Word of God. The Minister leads the congregation in giving
thanks to God in prayer. |
| "The sermon being ended, the minister is to give thanks ..." (Westminister Directory of Public Worship) |
| Following the prayer, a psalm is sung and the Minister dismisses the congregation with a benedicition. |
"The prayer ended, let a psalm be sung, if with conveniency it may be done. After which let the Minister dismiss the congregation with a solemn blessing." (Westminister Directory of Public Worship)
